Château Labastide Haute is an old estate, located in Cahors, France. Although the grape originated in France, Cahors has been called “the other malbec region,” with Mendoza, Argentina as the region most recognized for producing malbec. In France, malbec is also known as “côt” and was referred to in the Middle Ages as “black wine,” due to its dense and dark color. Given its tannic presentation, most malbecs tend to shine best with age, as do many of the other dark, heavy red varieties grown in Cahors.
The black currant and berry flavors of the wine are given shape by oak influence that softens and rounds some of the acidity. This wine is dense and flavorful with a rich bitter cocoa finish. We suggest pairing this with bleu cheese, leaner meats like turkey and mushrooms.
