Early Mountain Vineyards sits on 350 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The vineyards were planted in 2005 and then purchased by Jean Case and her husband Steve in 2010. They expanded in 2015 to a new vineyard in Madison County. They grow cabernet franc, merlot, tannat, malvasia bianca, sauvignon blanc, and vidal blanc. Winemaker Maya Hood White adjusts her winemaking to the vintage, with an approach of fermenting block-by-block utilizing ambient ferments, judicious stem inclusion, and low-intervention winemaking. The élevage for many of their wines includes long lees aging in large-format barrels to build complexity and texture.
This wine is full of personality. The winemaker’s call it a “red drinker’s white wine. Notes of grilled pineapple, and cooked apples mingle savory kitchen herbs like tarragon and a stony minerality.
